Gallatin History
At one time, the area now known as Gallatin, TN was a hunting ground for Native Indians (Chickasaw, Creek, and Cherokee). This area was first settled by Thomas Sharp Spencer. He came to build a cabin for himself and began to farm. Would you believe that just a few years prior, he was in this very same area. Only at that time he had to spend the entire winter camped inside a hollow Sycamore tree.
Even though Thomas Sharp Spencer was settled in 1779, it wasn't until a year later that the first permanent settlement was made at Bledsoe Lick. This was the first fort built in this area to protect against the Native Indians.
Once surveyed as a new territory, many people started to come to this new area known as Gallatin. Andrew Jackson was even the first person to purchase a plot of land. Soon after, Gallatin began growing...gaining a courthouse and jail.
Less than a year after the Civil War broke, Gallatin was captured by the Union Army. It wasn't until a few months later when General John H. Morgan recaptured the town and kept it that way. After the war, Gallatin was occupied by military forces for some time. Once it came time for the military to depart from this area, Gallatin was back to a growing southern community.
